For Bangalore…
For the Bangali Mashima in Malleshwaram who would drag me along to get Fish from Yeshwantpura
For the Coorgi Aunty in Indiranagar who fed me delectable chicken biryani
For the cafeteria workers who very kindly served me sugar with my curd after laughing at my request for the first few days
For the same cafeteria, where I had delicious breakfasts of Uppittu and idli, if I managed to reach early enough.
For the 3’o clock tea time with madur vadas that helped me stay awake
For the house in Koramangala, where I first set up home after marriage and munched on idlis while sipping tea and perusing the Page 3 of Bangalore Times
For the Darshini right beside home in Koramangala, which provided steaming idlis and chutney wrapped in banana leaf for Saturday morning breakfasts
For Taj West End where D gave me the first ever decent birthday treat and where I in my search for exotic yet low priced appetizers had a dish which turned out to be tiny sabudana wafers with a crab dipping.
For Koshy’s where I loved eating appams and everything else
For Queens where we waited patiently for the warm, soft phulkas and baingan bharta
For Ebony where we had Balti cuisine at a height
For the Corner Café and its ice cream
For Lakeview on MG Road and more ice cream
For Karavalli where the ambience was splendid and the rasam hot
For Nagarjuna Savoy and its tomato soup followed by the tastiest Hyderabadi biryani
For MTR near Lalbagh and the Upma with huge dollops of ghee
For KC Dass and my Sunday fixes of Bangali Shingara and Kachuri
For Krishna Chinnai, a small place in Koramangala, a very spicy biryani and a minimal price
For Casa Picola and my first and best Pasta
For Sukhsagar and tiny orange Gobi Manchurians
For the Auntie across the street who fed us idlis and chutney on the morning we packed and left…

I know Karnataka is much more beyond B'lore but this is just reliving my memories of my happy days there. This list is from many moons ago and things and menu might have changed, so swalpa adjust maadi
Trivia: I heard about a band called AutoRickshaw with roots in South India who fuse Indian rhythms with North American pop. I heard the feature on PRI. I loved the music and thought of sharing with you all. Click to visit the "Global Hit" Page here and download the mp3

Oh, what a nice tribute to BLR and the people you met there! I'd forgotten a few of the places- Ebony- what a nice view it had from the terrace and KC Das -loved their Mishti Doi and Chamchams. I don't think I ever tried appams at Koshy's. I had a nice trip down memory lane. Nice post, San! :)

ReplyDeleteYou really make me crave to go back to B'lore right now. Brings back real fond memories, especially being a 'pucca' B'lore girl! I miss every single one that you have mentioned. I miss KC Das rosgullas the most! Thanks for such a wonderful trip down memory lane.
ReplyDeleteWonderful memories...btw, I wouldn't laugh if you asked for sugar with your curd ;)
ReplyDeleteSandeepa,
ReplyDeleteThat is an excellent write up. I have been in b'lore just for a fortnight but this post made me all nostalgic about that stay. Loved the swalpa adjust maadi...

I've been lurking for some time now..but *had* to de-lurk and post a comment after reading your entry about Bangalore (home for more than nine years and one of my favourite cities- *sob* I miss it)..
ReplyDeleteI miss especially the benne masal dosa (butter masal dosa) in this tiny place in malleswaram called CTR..

ReplyDeleteLovely writeup and nice entry simple and delicious.
ReplyDeleteyes sandeepa thats one more thing in common :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband's a bengali from Bangalore...thats where i met him..and thats where we "courted"(I am being rather old-fashioned here, ain't I??) and thats where my acquired family lives.....it's a lovely city and i;m glad it has such happy memories for me (and for you) :)
lovely poetry of eateries in Bangalore, will try to remember it while visiting Bangalore. I have never tasted Uppittu before, will give this dish a try for sure.
ReplyDeleteA most tasty entry.
ReplyDeleteThanks Everyone. You all really did like "swalpa adjust maadi" didn't you :)What a phrase does to you.
ReplyDeleteBTW do listen to that music and let me know, it really is good, goes well with the Uppittu ;-)
This brings back my own memories from childhood days in Karnataka (in my case, Mysore). Most people use Upma to refer to this dish; I guess only those in Karnataka know it by this name.
ReplyDeleteHi Sandeepa, You brought back so many memories of Bangalore. Really really nostalgic. Have fun with friends.
ReplyDeleteHey Sandeepa:
ReplyDeletethat was quite an ode to Bangalore :). Queens and Corner House were quite a combo na! and i loved the Chung-Wah and Mainland China too :-D.

ReplyDeleteOk, what the heck... :) You have a great memory Sandeepa... I do remember very few, Koshi's, Queens, Ebony, Karavalli... and the late night dinners at Taj.... Hey, we might have been living in Bangalore at the same time... :)
ReplyDeleteNice writeup on the memories of the past... It sure brings a smile on your face when u think abt some of the happy moments of the past.
ReplyDeletelovely presentation Sandeepa:)
ReplyDeleteLOVELY presentation, Sandeepa. The colors, textures and composition are first rate. And your dedications are equally nuanced and pleasing.
ReplyDeleteWhy would anyone laugh at your request for sugar with your curd? Is that just not done? Is curd a soft, delicate paneer?
Hey, sorry yaar, while replying to the restaurant query, i totally forgot about anardana. I bought them from an Indian store in Boston long ago. They are available in Indian Stores usually, have seen them here too.
ReplyDeleteEven if I've never seen these places, Sandeepa, I enjoyed your post thoroughly :)
ReplyDeleteNow I tried to look up swalpa adjust maadi. I didn't get far, but sounds a bit like "taking it all in stride" to me. Care to enlighten? :)
Lovely entry Sandeepa. I could relate to each and everything except the setting up home part of it. I am from Bangalore and can imagine what wonderful memories one has of that beautiful and exciting city.
ReplyDeleteJust trying to change up the template, and trying out various ones. Except I have no time to do it properly!
ReplyDeleteAnyways, I'm sick of bloggers templates. They are all so boring! Im thinking of changing to wordpress....
You guys have put a lot of effort to changing up the templates so they look good, and i'm lazy.
thanks for dropping by :)
Kanch
ps. I'm on my moms butt to get her to write something for the DMC.
Linda
ReplyDeleteIt means "please adjust a little". This was the common refrain I would hear from auto-drivers (auto rickshaws are popular in India as they are less expensive than cabs) on my way back home from work.
It would be late, there would be potholes, the fare would be hiked and for all of these the driver would say "swalpa adjust maadi"
Thanks for the explanation, Sandeepa. I really like that :)
ReplyDeletewhat a fantastic write-up! S, sometimes I think you have been a writer :)
ReplyDeletetasty looking Uppittu dear :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is a lovely entry sandeepa. It looks yummy. the write up was interesting. Viji

ReplyDeleteI just love your weblog! Very nice post! Still you can do many things to improve it.
ReplyDeletev well written indeed. but where is d recipe?
ReplyDeleteI completely related to everything you have written here. Been there, done that! Landed straight from Delhi in Blore and loved every bit of my life there! Our office cafeteria also had a Bong cook, who introduced fried mackerel in the evenings! And boy I would just work late to eat that.
ReplyDeleteDid you miss out on the Hot Chips and NandHini's Biryani? And the mutton rolls from Lazeez (K'mangala and Commercial Street)?
